Abstract
Molecular markers correspond to a wide range of tools, which have been developed over the last few decades, for direct and indirect analysis of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), in order to bring about the development of structural genomics. The Restriction fragment length polymorphic (RFLP), Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), Microsatellites, Sequencing, Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and Expressed sequence tags (EST) are among these tools. The application of DNA marker technologies and the choice of some of these molecular methods are determined by the type of research conducted. The molecular markers have been used in areas such as ecology, evolution, systematic and also in aquaculture. In the latter area, the molecular markers have allowed resolving problems such as analyses of genetic variability, species identification, parental assignments or kinship, traceability, quantitative traits loci identification for marker assisted selection, and so on. This review summarizes the main lines developed for commercially important bivalve species in Latin America by means of molecular markers and the problems that resulted. Finally, a projection of the structural genomic development is outlined. The increasing need to generate Latin American networks of multidisciplinary teams is an important component for the future development of aquaculture in Latin America.
