Abstract
    (1) Owing to its, partially, man-made character, the former Hollands Diep-Haringvliet area was a digital estuary with rather unique characters. The β-mesohaline protruded beyond the coast line. The fairly large, glacier-fed Rhine discharge in summer reduces the residual times in this estuary to low values, with a poor development of the plankton as a result. 2) After the closure of the Volkerak and the Haringvliet (1970) residual times increased to 30–40 days in summer and in 1971 a diatom plankton, with Asterionella Formosa and Fragillaria crotonensis developed. In 1972 the blue-green algae Microcystis aeruginosa and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae made their entrance. (3) Developments of biota within the biotope are in full progress at the moment, and, in view of the heavy phosphate level, blue-green algae stand a good chance to dominate the plankton, as they already do in Lake Brielle.
