Abstract
During two years water samples were taken for phytoplankton study from three levels at a station that continuously receives a flow of water at a very low s.alinity over underlying seawater. This double influence induces vertical heterogeneity of the environment and controls phytoplankton composition and abundance. Identification of the abundant algae leads to a list of 125 taxa belonging to 10 classes. Diatoms are the most diversified one, including a majority of marine taxa. But the highest cell numbers are due to freshwater taxa: diatoms, blue-green algae and. above all, small chlorophyceae. Temporal and vertical variations are described. At 0 m phytoplankton taxonomical composition is approximately the same as in Etang de Berre or Canal de Caronte but, due to dilution, the population density is much less high and the annual cycle more pronounced. In underlying water marine influence generally prevails in composition and abundance of phytoplankton. A more or less sharp vertical gradient of abundance is always observed. The surface average is a little inferior to 107 cell 1 -l, the 7 m average is only about 2.10' cell 1-1 .
