| Abstract |
Along the Flemish coastal dunes 23 ant species can be found. Only ten are typical for open sandy habitats and can be marked as indicator species for dunes. Most other ant species are eurytopic and the number of red list species is also limited. The Flemish coastal dunes are less species-rich than those in the Netherlands because of the absence of coastal heathlands. Some dominant species are discussed in more detail. Finally the relationships between ants and soil development, myrmecochorous plants and myrmecophile invertebrates are discussed. In general, we can conclude that ants enhance small-scale soil and vegetation dynamics and that their nests give shelter to a lot of rare invertebrate species. Further study of these relationships is required. |
