| Abstract |
Springtails are very small insects, living in high densmes within soils and on the soil surface. They are important for nutrient recycling and are preferred preys for carnivorous insects and arachnids. To date, twenty species have been recorded in the flemish coastal dunes. Two of them [Xenylla maritime and Cryptopygus thermophilu] are probably typical for this habitat in our country. Other eurytopic species only occur in xerothermic habitats during autumn, winter and spring, seasons characterised by a high atmospheric humidity. More intensive research however should reveal the presence of more species. |
