Abstract
From the beginning, water surfaces shaped human mobility. They initially posed obstacles to migration influencing the overland migratory routes. Yet, technological innovations gradually turned rivers, lakes, and oceans into vehicles for all kinds of human interactions, including migration. Seas and oceans, which cover 71 percent of the globe's surface, were the last to be subdued by human invention. Maritime migrations are therefore closely connected to evolutions in the shipping world.
