Het onderzoek aan de laboratoire de Biologie des Organismes Marins et Biomimétisme van de Université de Mons richt zich voornamelijk op drie onderzoeksthema’s: (1) socio-ecologische aquacultuur, (2) symbiose en ziekten en (3) biomimetisme. Het onderzoek binnen de tak ‘socio-ecologische aquacultuur’ concentreert zich op de aquacultuur van voornamelijk zeekomkommers, algen en koralen, van dewelke bepaalde stappen beheerd kunnen worden door arme kustgemeenschappen. De groep heeft reeds grote successen geboekt inzake de ontwikkeling van de zeekomkommeraquacultuur en het merendeel van het gepubliceerde onderzoek binnen dit onderzoeksthema handelt dan ook over dit onderwerp. Het laboratorium was in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de ontwikkeling van een methode die het kweken van zeekomkommers in lokaal beheerde kwekerijen het ganse jaar door toelaat. Sinds 2002 is deze methode gepatenteerd, wat in 2008 leidde tot de oprichting van Madagascar Holothurie SA, het eerste handelsbedrijf voor zeekomkommers in Madagaskar. In 2013 opende de groep het Polyaquaculture Research Laboratory in Madagaskar in samenwerking met de Halieutic Institute and Marine Science van de Universiteit van Toliara.

De onderzoekstak ‘symbiose en ziekten’ is gespecialiseerd in mariene organismen betrokken in parasitische, commensalistische of mutualistische relaties. De levenscyclus, etiologie en fylogenie van symbiotische prokaryoten en verschillende symbiotische eukaryoten (o.a. Ctenaria, platwormen, borstelwormen, Myzostomida, mollusken, stekelhuidigen en vissen) worden bestudeerd om de factoren die de symbiotische interacties affecteren of reguleren beter te begrijpen, inclusief deze bij ziekten. Er worden diverse analytische methodes gebruikt, zoals elektronenmicroscopie (TEM en SEM), DNA-fylogenie en massaspectometrie.

De ‘biomimetisme’-tak richt zich op de verschillende proteïne-gebaseerde adhesie-mechanismen ontwikkeld door mariene invertebraten. Het doel van dit onderzoek is een gedetailleerd inzicht te verwerven in biologische adhesia om synthetische varianten te ontwikkelen. Alle adhesie-systemen bij mariene organismen verschillen in werking, structuur en kenmerken van hun adhesieve proteïnen. Deze vormen daarom complementaire biologische modellen voor de studie van bioadhesie in het mariene milieu.
