De Operationele Directie (OD) Taxonomie en Fylogenie maakt deel uit van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN) dat in 1846 werd opgericht onder de toenmalige naam, het Koninklijk Natuurhistorisch Museum van België. Binnen deze OD wordt onderzoek verricht naar de biodiversiteit bij dieren en de evolutie ervan. Ze houden zich vooral bezig met soortvorming, adaptatie, biotische interacties en zogenoemde ‘integratieve’ taxonomie. Bijzondere aandacht gaat onder meer naar het identificeren van nieuwe taxa (onder andere via DNA-barcoding), de impact van invasieve soorten, het belang van chemische communicatie bij insecten, de gevolgen van habitatverstoring, de reconstructie van fylogenetische verwantschappen, en ook naar de discussie evolutie vs. creationisme.

De groep bestudeert een beperkt aantal mariene taxa. Het gaat onder meer om stekelhuidigen (Echinodermata) (in samenwerking met de wetenschappelijke dienst “Erfgoed”), schaaldieren (Crustacea), weekdieren (Mollusca), ringwormen (partim: Oligochaeta) en sponzen (Porifera). Er wordt veldwerk ondernomen over heel de wereld waarbij vooral het werk in Antarctica en de Zuidelijke Oceaan een belangrijke mariene component heeft. De groep is hierbij onder meer betrokken bij SCAR-MarBIN ‘Het Antarctisch Marien Biodiversiteit Informatienetwerk’.
