De belangrijkste onderzoeksinteresse van de onderzoeksgroep Gedragsecologie en Ecofysiologie is de studie van de oorzaken en gevolgen van de variatie in gedragskenmerken bij individuen. Een belangrijke uitdaging in de biologie is het begrijpen van de interacties tussen een organisme en zijn omgeving. Gedrag bevindt zich in de kern van deze associatie, aangezien het van invloed is op en beïnvloed wordt door ontwikkeling, fysiologie, ecologische dynamiek, omgevingskeuze en evolutie. Daarom kan gedrag worden beschouwd als een belangrijke component van de integratieve biologie in een door de mens veranderde wereld. We bestuderen gedrag vanuit vier perspectieven (mechanismen, ontwikkeling, adaptieve functie, fylogenie) tegelijk, en gebruiken daarbij een geïntegreerd en interdisciplinair kader. We passen theoretische en methodologische inzichten uit de dierengedrags- en gedragsecologie toe in de conservatiebiologie en global change biologie. Het overkoepelende doel van ons onderzoek is uit te leggen en idealiter te voorspellen hoe individuen en soorten reageren op door de mens veroorzaakte snelle milieuveranderingen. Het meeste onderzoek heeft betrekking op terrestrische vogels, hoewel steeds meer studies zich richten op mariene soorten. Wat marien onderzoek betreft, wordt de voortplantings- en foerageerecologie bestudeerd bij kleinere mantelmeeuwen, verschillende pinguïnsoorten en Noorse stormvogels met behulp van veldproeven en GPS-traceringstechnologieën. We bestuderen ook de rol van verschillende zeevogelsoorten als biomonitor van vervuiling en milieuveranderingen. We onderzoeken zowel de indicatoren als de gevolgen van blootstelling, met inbegrip van immuunfunctie, endocrinologie, reproductie en de expressie van visuele en akoestische eigenschappen. Bijzondere aandacht wordt besteed aan het gebruik van vogelveren als niet-destructieve indicator van zowel blootstelling aan als effecten (stresshormonen) van verontreinigende stoffen. Met behulp van gearchiveerde verencollecties uit musea worden temporele trends in een breed scala van verontreinigende stoffen bestudeerd.
