Abstract:
Het laboratorium voor Analytische Chemie en Toegepaste Ecochemie (ECOCHEM) van de Universiteit Gent voert onderzoek naar het chemische en biologische gedrag van nutriënten en toxische elementen in natuurlijke ecosystemen en de landbouw. Sporenelementen, en in het bijzonder zware metalen, vormen de focus van de onderzoeksactiviteiten. Het onderzoek strekt zich uit over domeinen zoals analytische milieuchemie, biogeochemie en milieutechnologie.

Binnen het laboratorium wordt onder meer het Schelde-estuarium bestudeerd, waar het gedrag van zware metalen in sedimenten, intergetijdenzones en overstromingsgebieden onder de loep wordt genomen. De bio-beschikbaarheid wordt onderzocht als een koppeling van het gehalte en de speciatie van de zware metalen in organismen en planten tot het gehalte en de speciatie van deze metalen in de sedimenten. Speciale aandacht wordt gegeven aan het effect van de veranderende redoxcondities, het organisch materiaal en het zoutgehalte op de mobiliteit en beschikbaarheid van de metalen, alsook de bepaling van de vorm waarin sporenelementen aanwezig zijn (speciatie-analyse). Er wordt eveneens gefocust op micropolluenten die in de toekomst aan belang zullen winnen, zoals bv. metallische nanopartikels.

Het laboratorium werkt in dit domein intens samen met diverse binnen- en buitenlandse universiteiten en onderzoeksinstituten. Tevens organiseert het laboratorium een internationale congressenreeks rond het gedrag en beheer van polluenten in wetlands (WETPOL).
