Abstract:
De onderzoeksgroep Geobiologie verricht fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek op het raakvlak van geologie en biologie. Hun hoofddoel is het genereren van diepgaande inzichten over de interacties tussen de biosfeer enerzijds en de geosfeer, hydrosfeer en atmosfeer anderzijds. Als onderdeel van hun maatschappelijke missie hanteert de groep een 'oplossingsgericht' perspectief, waarbij onderzocht wordt hoe biologie en natuurlijke systemen op biologie gebaseerde oplossingen kunnen bieden voor belangrijke maatschappelijke uitdagingen. Voorbeelden van onderzoek zijn het onderzoek naar elektrische microbiële systemen in de zeebodem (microben in de zeebodem die elektriciteit opwekken en geleiden), de beperking van klimaatverandering door CO2-captatie in kustmilieus, alkalisering van de oceanen en het behoud en herstel van wetlands en heidevelden met het oog op biodiversiteitsverrijking en koolstofopslag.
