Abstract:
Het departement Burgerlijke Bouwkunde van de KU Leuven herbergt een aantal onderzoeksafdelingen actief in marien onderzoek:
- Afdeling Hydraulica;
- Coastal and Geotechnical Engineering group van de Technologiecluster Bouw, Campus Brugge;
- Afdeling Structural Mechanics;
- Building Materials and Building Technologies afdeling;
- Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation.

De afdeling Hydraulica bestudeert een verscheidenheid aan mariene onderwerpen. Het laboratorium doet onderzoek naar de interactie tussen golven, stromingen en transport van zwevende deeltjes (d.w.z. niet-cohesieve en cohesieve sedimenten, zandbedmengsels en microplastics). Andere belangrijke onderzoeksthema’s zijn het modelleren van door getijden en stormen geïnduceerde stromingen, het modelleren van sedimenttransportprocessen, d.w.z. interactie tussen deeltjes en turbulentie, bezinking en flocculatie, erosie, dynamisch gedrag (zelf-gewichtsconsolidatie en fluïdisatie door golven) van cohesieve sedimentbodems en modderreologie, en het voorspellen van morfologische veranderingen in estuaria en langs kusten. In deze context spelen teledetectiewaarnemingen een belangrijke rol. Daarnaast richten de onderzoekers zich op de mogelijke effecten van klimaatverandering op de verschillende functies van kusten en estuariene gebieden. De nadruk ligt op veranderingen in de randvoorwaarden (golven en stormvloeden) en de mogelijke gevolgen (bijvoorbeeld overstromingen). Het laboratorium is actief betrokken bij nationale en internationale onderzoeksprojecten. Het neemt ook deel aan het nautisch bodemonderzoek van de afdeling Maritieme Toegang en het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium.

De Coastal and Geotechnical Engineering group op Campus Brugge focust op de interactie tussen water, bodem en kust- of watergebonden structuren. Voorbeelden zijn beoordelingen van morfologische veranderingen aan de kust; monitoring en modellering van eolisch zandtransport; numerieke simulatietools in kust- en waterbouwkunde met inbegrip van numerieke modellering van golfenergieomzetters in het nabije en verre veld voor offshore-energie; en cyclische belasting van funderingen. Samen met de afdeling Hydraulica is deze groep partner in het Kust en Oceaan Bekken op de site van Greenbridge in Oostende.

Het onderzoek in de afdeling Structural Mechanics van de KU Leuven concentreert zich op de dynamische analyse van structuren beroerd door wind, aardbevingen, verkeer, bouwactiviteiten en machines. De methodologieën en numerieke technieken die ontwikkeld werden in de afdeling Structural Mechanics hebben een brede toepasbaarheid: zo werden er vibratiemonitoringstechnieken toegepast op nabij- en offshore constructies (windturbines, sluisdeuren, etc.) waar de inschatting van wind- en golfbelastingen een cruciaal aspect vormt in het ontwerp en de bouw van deze constructies.

Het onderzoek van de afdeling Building Materials and Building Technologies houdt zich bezig met de duurzaamheid van bouwmaterialen, met inbegrip van zoutbelaste materialen in kustmilieus en met het potentiële gebruik van secundaire grondstoffen die afkomstig zijn van kust- of riviermaterialen. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de (gepatenteerde) ontwikkeling van aanvullende cementachtige materialen uit slib van de Schelde.

Het Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC), gezamenlijk ondersteund door de departementen Burgerlijke Bouwkunde en Architectuur, is actief op het gebied van cultureel erfgoed aan de kust. Het onderzoek heeft betrekking op het op één lijn brengen van het kustbeleid met het cultureel erfgoed, op basis van het inzicht dat cultureel erfgoed een hulpbron is voor (lokale) duurzame ontwikkeling, in overeenstemming met het rapport ‘Culturele erfgoedswaarden voor Europa’.
