Abstract:
Het centrum voor Microbiële Ecologie en Technologie (CMET) werd opgericht in 1978 en is gespecialiseerd in de studie en toepassing van gemengde microbiële culturen en gemeenschappen. CMET richt zich op het optimale beheer van deze microbiële hulpbronnen (Microbial Resource Management, MRM) om de ontwikkeling van nieuwe producten en processen mogelijk te maken die het milieu en de menselijke gezondheid op de meest duurzame manier verbeteren. Meer bepaald past CMET deze aanpak toe op het gebied van toegepaste microbiële ecologie, functionele voeding, medische microbiële ecologie, risicobeoordeling, biomaterialen en nanotechnologie, waterbehandeling, aquacultuur, bio-energie, en bodem en sedimenten.

CMET verricht onderzoek naar de volgende mariene onderwerpen:
  • microbiële diversiteit en activiteit in diepe mariene sedimentaire ecosystemen;

  • simulatie van de diepzeebiosfeer met behulp van een continue hogedrukbioreactor;

  • bioremediatie van mariene ecosystemen.


Het Centrum werkt intensief samen met verschillende buitenlandse instituten (bv. Shanghai JiaoTong University, Universiteit van Milaan, Technische Universiteit van Kreta en de Universiteit van Bologna) en neemt deel aan het UGent Aquaculture R&D consortium. Voorts is de groep betrokken bij verschillende Europese en nationale mariene onderzoeksprojecten.
