Men verwacht dat in de volgende tientallen jaren de wereldmarkt voor producten die afkomstig zijn van planten exponentieel zal groeien. We gebruiken immers planten om de groeiende wereldbevolking te voeden en planten zullen een cruciale rol spelen op het vlak van energievoorziening en de toenemende vraag voor hernieuwbare industriële hulpbronnen. Het valt te verwachten dat de (bio-)technologische vooruitgang de productiviteit van de gewassen en hun kwaliteit verder zal doen toenemen. Daarnaast zullen nieuwe technologieën zorgen voor de ontwikkeling van landbouwactiviteiten die beter stroken met de natuurlijke omgeving. De missie van PSB bestaat erin om bij te dragen tot het oplossen van de hierboven beschreven uitdagingen door de wetenschappelijke basis te voorzien voor innovaties en deze innovaties ingang te laten vinden in de maatschappij. Het onderzoek wordt ingedeeld in vijf thematische gebieden die belangrijke uitdagingen en opportuniteiten voor plantonderzoek behandelen:
- Duurzame bio-energie en bio-gebaseerde producten;
- Klimaat-resistente gewassen;
- Plant-diversiteit;
- Innovatieve gewassenverzorging;
- Planten en menselijke gezondheid.

Het mariene aspect van het onderzoek vindt voornamelijk plaats in de groep Bioinformatica en Systeembiologie die werkt op functionele, structurele en vergelijkende genomica. Dit onderzoek focust zich in de eerste plaats op soorten met een rol binnen de aquacultuur zoals Artemia (in samenwerking met het laboratorium voor Aquacultuur en het Artemia Reference Center (UGent)), verscheidene pico-algen (in samenwerking met Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls sur Mer, Frankrijk) en Amoebohpyra (samenwerking met het Roscoff Marien Station, Frankrijk). Andere mariene onderzoeksthema’s focussen op zeegrassen en de genetische studie van algen (diatomeëen) waarvoor samenwerkingsverbanden zijn opgebouwd met de onderzoeksgroepen voor Protistologie en Aquatische Ecologie en Fycologie.
