De Koninklijke Militaire School (KMS) is een militaire instelling van universitair onderwijs belast met de basisvorming van toekomstige officieren (academisch, militair, sportief), en met de voortgezette vorming van officieren tijdens hun loopbaan in het departement Defensie.

Binnen de KMS wordt eveneens onderzoek verricht dat zich in de eerste plaats richt op het oplossen van militaire problemen. Daarnaast worden thema’s met betrekking tot veiligheid en beveiliging bestudeerd. Ten slotte, kunnen ook bredere strategische aangelegenheden zoals energie-onafhankelijkheid aan bod komen.

De mariene thematiek situeert zich voornamelijk in het veld van de remote sensing in de brede zin. Er wordt onderzoek gedaan op het gebied van mijnenbestrijding, bv. Om de prestaties van bestaande sonars en gradiëntmeters te verbeteren. Het omvat onder meer ook onderzoek naar lucht- en ruimtesensoren zoals verstrooiingsmeters. Dit zijn radarinstrumenten die de windsnelheid en windrichting boven het wateroppervlak meten.
