Abstract:
De Koninklijke Militaire School (KMS) is een militaire instelling van universitair onderwijs die verantwoordelijk is voor de academische, militaire en fysieke basisopleiding van toekomstige officieren, en voor de voortgezette geavanceerde opleiding van officieren tijdens hun actieve loopbaan bij Defensie.

De KMS voert ook wetenschappelijk onderzoek uit op universitair niveau voor projecten gefinancierd door de Belgische Defensie of externe financieringsagentschappen op regionaal, federaal of Europees niveau. Hoewel onderzoeksthema's vooral gericht zijn op het oplossen van militaire problemen, neemt de KMS ook deel aan en coördineert het onderzoeksprojecten gericht op civiele toepassingen, meestal binnen het beveiligings-/veiligheidsdomein in brede zin. Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd in samenwerking met andere onderzoeksinstellingen, universiteiten, de industrie en andere wetshandhavingsinstanties (LEA's). Academische afdelingen binnen de KMS zijn (1) Communicatie, informatie, systemen en sensoren; (2) Economie, management en leiderschap; (3) Natuurkunde; (4) Leven; (5) Mechanica; (6) Wiskunde; (7) Gedragswetenschappen; (8) Chemie; (9) Conflictstudies; (10) Wapensystemen en ballistiek. Tenslotte wordt in veel ruimere zin ook actief onderzoek gedaan naar strategische vraagstukken zoals energieonafhankelijkheid en economische gevolgen.

De mariene onderzoeksthema's situeren zich op het gebied van teledetectie in ruime zin. Er wordt onderzoek verricht op het gebied van mijnbestrijding, bv. om de prestaties van bestaande sonars en gradiëntmeters te verhogen en de invloed van de omgeving op hun prestaties te evalueren. Andere onderzoeksprojecten hebben betrekking op maritiem situationeel bewustzijn, waarbij verschillende sensoren, zoals EO-camera's en LiDAR, in verschillende (on)bemande voertuigen worden gemonteerd. Het betreft onder meer ook onderzoek naar sensoren in de lucht en in de ruimte, zoals scatterometers, radarinstrumenten die de windsnelheid en -richting boven het wateroppervlak meten.
