Abstract
This paper presents an assessment of the SWAN model' s performance in the west coast of Portugal, north of Sines Harbour. The SWAN model is a third generation phase-averaged spectral model, which features all the relevant physical mechanisms in shallow water wind wave propagation, with the exception of the diffraction phenomenon. In the seaward boundary the model was forced with data from a "WAVEC" directional buoy, moored in 97 m depth, and with simulations from a WAM model. The SWAN predictions were compared to near shore ADCP measurements (17 m depth). The significant wave height (Hs) and the peak wave period (Tp) were the parameters employed in the study. The results show a fairly good agreement. Forcing the SWAN with WAM exhibits less accurate predictions, however, the feasibility of using the output of the latter is demonstrated. To apply 2D full spectra as the offshore boundary condition leads to a significant improvement in the statistics of the peak period.
