Buildings
Harbour towns and fishing places consists of various buildings built to service the fishing industry over time. Historic buildings provide a sense of time-deepened connection to fishing, although their use today may be for non-fishing activities, such as cafes, museums or homes. Modern-day infrastructure to service the fishing industry also influences place character and might include modern fish auction houses, industrial processing facilities or fish-selling stalls.
In F?camp, the old herring smoking factory, the P?cheries de F?camp, which closed in 2002, is being regenerated to house the new fishing and art museum. Cadgwith, in Cornwall, owes part of its character to the construction of fishing cellars in medieval times followed by lofts, capstan houses and other structures dating from the 16th century. In Hastings, the old fishermen’s church now houses the Fishermen’s Museum.
