Cultural Identity

Signs and decoration

Fishing is represented in the physical environment through signs and imagery. Such objects include wall tiles, decorative glazing, ornamentation, signs, information boards and public art. This material culture associated with fishing contributes to place identity and may be thought of as important markers of identity, both for the local community and as an attraction for tourism.

The images in this exhibition include a mosaic in Hastings Old Town depicting fishing activity, a house sign in Barfleur (France), a sign advertising fishing trips for tourists in Poole, wall art in Breskens harbour (Netherlands) and a tourist information board about different types of fishing activity in Hastings.
