Sommige HABs veroorzaken fysische schade, bijvoorbeeld deze met soorten die weerhaken bezitten en zich hiermee vastzetten op de kieuwen van vissen, die vervolgend sterven. HABs kunnen ook esthetische kwaad teweegbrengen.  <P>Naast de nutriëntenconcentratie zijn er nog andere abiotische parameters die van belang zijn voor het ontwikkelen en behoud van een HAB, zoals een lage turbulentie en waterdoorstroom, veel licht en hoge temperaturen. Een “red tide” is een bijzonder type algenbloei. Deze bloei is zo intens dat het water verkleurd wordt. Ze kunnen zowel gevormd worden door schadelijke als onschadelijke algen. Een red tide is dus wel een “bloom”, maar niet noodzakelijk een HAB. Ongeveer 6% van alle fytoplanktonsoorten kan een red tide vormen.

 From a scientific point of view, a more precise indication of scientific origins of this concept (biological carrying capacity, originating from population biology) and later application (social carrying capacity) would help to better understand the sense of the assessment. The relation to "limits of growth" is not correct to my opinion.
