Although Owenia fusiformis can be found in fine to coarse sediments (150 to 500 μm) the species only reaches a high relative occurrence in the finer sediments. Sediment has to contain mud to be suitable for O. fusiformis. The highest relative occurrence is reached in sediments with a mud content of 10 to 40%. Owenia fusiformis does not occur in sediments with a mud content exceeding 40%.
