Mosselkreeftjes zijn kleine kreeftachtigen - gemiddeld 1 millimeter groot – waarvan het lichaam grotendeels bestaat uit een kop en geheel beschermd wordt door twee kalkachtige kleppen. Hun kleur varieert, maar de meest voorkomende schakeringen omvatten grijs, bruin of groen. De meeste mosselkreeftjes leven op of in de bovenste laag van de zeebodem. Andere leven dan weer in zoet water of op land, in vochtige bosgrond. De voedingswijze van deze groep is zeer uiteenlopend: ze omvat zowel grazers, vleeseters, aaseters als filtervoeders. Mosselkreeftjes zijn heel belangrijke gidsfosielen: hun verkalkte kleppen fossiliseren en stellen wetenschappers zo in staat om gesteentes te dateren…
