Abstract
In this new book the author (Professor of Fisheries Economics at the University of Iceland) provides a highly–detailed, systematic analysis of the evolution and structure of the Icelandic fishing industry supported by a wealth of statistics which will be of interest to all fisheries managers, fisheries economists and the fisheries scientists. Discussing in turn the catching, processing and marketing aspects of the industry, the text then examines the original extensive phase of intensive development. The fisheries management system and its success in the industry as a whole is explained. A major, concluding section assesses the overall economic performance of the Icelandic fisheries and compares it to that of other nations highlighting those areas where the Icelandic experience might serve as a model.
