Abstract |
The occurrence of Recent and Tertiary brachiopods in Dutch coastal waters and on Dutch beaches is discussed, mainly after a paper published in issues by Lacourt. At present, no autochthonous recent brachiopod species are known from coastal waters in the Netherlands. Pliocene species encountered mainly on beaches of the province of Zeeland are assigned to two species, Pliothyrina sowerbyana (Nyst, 1843) and Terebratula distinguenda Lacourt, 1984 (the latter with a query), in contrast with the 30 names assigned to the two by Lacourt (Lacourt's names are listed between square brackets). Furthermore, the occurrence in Dutch waters of the minute Gwynia capsula (Jeffreys, 1859) is discussed. It seems that a dubious record dating back to as early as 1878 has been copied over and over again and that the species has never actually been found in Dutch waters. |
