| Abstract |
In the Flemish coastal dunes, 32 mammal species have been observed regularly. None of these is dune specific and seven species are categorized as threatened or rare on the Flemish red list. Exotic species have also colonized the dune area. Probably the most important species is the rabbit, imported from the Mediterranean area in the 13th century. This species prefers sandy, open habitats with a certain amount of shelter. Their grazing, digging and excretion activities have a huge impact on the vegetation. Viral diseases however, led to a dramatic decline of the rabbit population. Recently, the fox colonised the dune area again. Its presence can have a substantial negative impact on the presence and densities of ground-breeding birds. |
