Abstract
    The effects of locally acting factors on the recruitment of Z. marina L. transplants from seed were tested, i.e. the presence of a layer of water above the sediment during low tide, sediment type and exposure to wave action. Two field experiments were carried out to test the separate and combined effects of these factors. One of the experiments was duplicated with seeds originating from another Z. marina population to test possible differences in donor suitability. In both experiments, germination, seedling survival and shoot increase were monitored for 13 weeks. Muddy sediments were most suitable to germination (P = 0.10). Seedling survival differed between donor populations (P < 0.05), indicating the importance of careful selection of the donor population in restoration programs. A permanent layer of water on the sediment during low tide, as well as sheltered conditions, were favourable to the seedling shoot increase (P < 0.05 and 0.001, respectively).
