Abstract
Water consumption on the isle of Borkum in front of the mouth of the Ems River has been steadily increasing from 315.000 in 1948 to 750.000 m3 p.a. in 1973. Peak use occurs in summer at the height of the touristic season. Fresh water is being extracted from the dune areas. Increasing demand has provoked a hydrogeological investigation. A geo-electrical survey has revealed the presence of a large fresh-water lens in the eastern part of the island. Hydrochemical investigations explain the evolution of the groundwater conditions and provide a means of control for a safe withdrawal of water from this lens.
