Abstract
This work is divided into two main parts, one dealing with storm surges in the North Sea and the other with storm surges on the west coast of the British Isles. The discussion, however, is not confined to conditions in these two regions; to provide background information, references are given to investigations into the surges experienced in other sea areas. The review includes relevant theoretical work which often has quite general application. The papers considered cover a period of about forty years up to the present time. Several excellent reviews of storm surges already exist. In particular, reference should be made to the work of Groen and Groves (1962), Welander (1961), and Charnock and Crease (1957). Probably the most comprehensive list of references is contained in the Bibliography on Generation of Currents and Changes of Surface-Level in Oceans, Seas and Lakes by Wind and Atmospheric Pressure 1726-1955, published by the International Association of Physical Oceanography (1957). Note should also be taken of the papers presented at a symposium on storm surges organized by the International Association of Physical Oceanography (1954).
