| Abstract |
The Celtic Sea is a shallow embayment of the eastern North Atlantic bounded by the Celtic lands of Southern Ireland, southwest Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. It may be arbitrarily separated from the Irish Sea by a line drawn from Ramsey Island, Pembrokeshire to Carnsore Point and from the English Channel by a line drawn from Ushant to Lands End. It is convenient to think of the Bristol Channel east of a line from Ramsey Island to Lands End as a separate area. The outer limit of the Celtic Sea may be set at the break of slope in 90-100 fm (165-185 m) so that the complex system of submarine canyons which dissects the continental slope and the structure of the water masses there will not be further considered. |
