Description Trichomes free-floating, aggregated in parallel in elongated, band-like colonies, up to 2 cm long and 3 mm wide, olive-green, flexuous. Trichomes straight or bent, cylindrical, slightly constricted at the cross-walls, isopolar, on both ends with long, cylindrical, terminal cells, at the ends cylindrical-rounded. Cells cylindrical to slightly barrel-shaped, ± isodiametric with olive-green protoplast and numer¬ous aerotopes, 4-12.1 x 4.4-8 μm; apical cells elongated and up to 24.3 gm long, without aerotopes, almost hyaline, usually with characteristic remains of cytoplasm in form of an irregular, lengthwise string. Heterocytes intercalary, solitary, usu¬ally 1 (up to 3) in a trichome, cylindrical, 10-18 x 5-8.5 μm. Akinetes intercalary, long cylindrical, distant from heterocytes, 40-220 x 6-10.8 μm. — Several varieties and forms were described, the taxonomic position of which is unclear (var. hercynium Kützing ex Forti 1907, var. haerdtlii Fjerdingstad 1966, f. incurvatum Černov 1950, f. macrosporum Fedorov 1970). The var. minus Nair probably does not belong to Aphanizomenon[details]

Distribution Freshwater, in eutrophic reservoirs, light adapted (in water with high transparency and usually accompanied with large species of zooplankton), often in almost monospecific populations; common, but only in temperate zones of both hemispheres, all data from tropical regions are misinterpretations. [details]
