I am Mike Moore from the European Center for Environmental Human health, which is part of the Peninsula Medical School in England and also from Plymouth Marine Laboratory. I am here today as the invited keynote speaker talking about “Oceans and Human Health”. In this capacity I am the chairman of a working group on “Oceans and Human Health” for the European Science Foundation’s Marine Board. They have tasked us with producing a position paper which will include recommendation to the European Union’s Science directorate on the development of a future program on “Oceans and Human Health”. I was very impressed with the talks I heard - very high standard - and also with the poster presentations. It is very good to see the wide range of activities the people are engaged in, very many of them involved in interdisciplinary research. Many of them also are involved in aspects that are potentially important contributors to the area in which I and my colleagues are concerned with; in other words to the marine environment and human health. Both the benefits that comes from the marine environment like food as fish and other seafood or the health benefits of living near the marine environment, … As well as the potential threats like pollution by chemicals, and harmful organisms such as bacteria and viruses. Many of today’s talks were related to this. Also there was one in particular that was looking at networking processes, dealing with the application of social networks to ecosystems. This is exactly the sort of thing that needs to be developed in the area of science that I am involved in. Overall, I had a great day! I find the science fascinating and the enthusiasm of the young scientists that I was talking to has been terrific. I am Jean Berlamont, professor at the Laboratory of Hydraulics of the University of Leuven. I am a civil engineer by profession. I was at the VLIZ Young Marine Scientist Day before, although it has been a couple of years. I am impressed by the quality of the presentations and about the quality of the scientific work that is going on. There is a good future for marine sciences in Belgium. My message to the young scientists is twofold: First, as everybody is working in his own, narrow field it is very important to look wider and have contacts with people from related fields, in order to reach relevant scientific results. This might be one of the reasons to remain the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists Days. My second message is that (especially young) scientists have a certain amount of self-criticism; so that they look at a critical way to the results that comes out of the measurement or computer model. Jan Seys, head of the communication department of the Flanders Marine Institute VLIZ, explains how the outcome of a Marine Board position paper can be distributed to a broader public on the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists Day 2012. Today we invited prof. Michael Moore from Plymouth Marine Laboratory on the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists Day 2012. First of all because he is a world expert in “oceans and human health”, but also as lead author of a position paper and a working group on this topic within the Marine Board. He has a role to play and he can show how the Marine Board is working in Europe to the research agenda on marine matters in the future. This day is all about networking, bringing young people together that deal with marine sciences, in all of its aspects – in a multidisciplinary way. On these days we traditionally also invite marine scientists with a lot of expertise: one Belgian speakers with a lot of experience in his/her field talking on his/her work, life and career in marine sciences. The second invited speaker is someone from abroad, introducing a theme that is relatively new in our region. In this 2012 edition we invited prof. Jean Berlamont, with a live long experience in sedimentation and geomorphology in estuaries and coastal areas. He is been talking not only about the content, but also about his life and career. And that is important for young people, as they can learn from how experienced people had to deal in their life with certain challenges and opportunities. The second invited speaker in 2012 is prof. Michael Moore from Plymouth Marine Laboratory. He is a world expert in “oceans and human health”. As lead author for a position paper for the Marine Board on this theme he is very well positioned to speak about the threats, the opportunities and challenges for the future. Jan Mees, director of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), explains the aim of the annual VLIZ Young Marine Scientist Day and why this event is so successful (in 2012 in its 12th edition). For VLIZ this annual meeting is a very important event, as in this event we target our core network: all the young marine scientists in our country and surroundings. We provide them with a central platform where they can interact and where they can meet each other and their peers, and with senior scientists. In this way VLIZ hopes to create an interdisciplinary and interuniversity network of marine young scientists and that they make relationships that last for their whole career in marine sciences and marine policy. Today we have 330 registered participants today, making a significant part of the marine science community in Belgium (1500 fulltime equivalents). They come from all universities within Flanders, but also from the francophone universities in Brussels and the south of Belgium. We also welcome participants from the north of France, The Netherlands. We see people from very different faculties and disciplines. We break down the barriers within institutes and between faculties and research divisions. The VLIZ Young Marine Scientists Days started in 2001 and was organized yearly since. We started with 100-250 participants and now we count 330, showing there is a lot of interest in this kind of event.]]>
