Blue Opportunity and Networking Day

International collaboration enables researchers to access additional, often specific expertise, as well as to discover new perspectives and build relationships with others in the field. To underline this importance, Marine@UGent welcomes VLIZ and the partners of the 3i University Network cluster for Marine and Maritime Challenges at Ostend Science Park to discuss the possibilities for collaboration with local scientific partners. On the occasion of this event, the new collaboration agreement between Ghent University and VLIZ will be inaugurated, and the new multidisciplinary research infrastructure of Ghent University will be presented at the Ostend Science Park.

The importance of international and national cooperation to tackle the problems and pressures on Europe's seas cannot be overstated. The central question in this is how to find a good balance between a healthy marine environment and various economic interests. This challenge is so large it cannot be tackled by one research group or withing one discipline.

Marine@UGent – an interdisciplinary consortium of 54 research groups from 8 faculties of Ghent University – invites VLIZ and the partners of the 3i University Network cluster for Marine and Maritime Challenges (Ghent University, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULAK), University of Kent and Université de Lille) to the Ostend Science Park for an academic session. Afterwards, participants can visit the research infrastructure of Ghent University in Ostend, and discover the Blue Economy activities (research and industry) in the port of Ostend.

The network day consists of 3 parts:

  • 9:30-13:00 Academic session
The rector of Ghent University, prof.dr. Rik Van de Walle and the General Director of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), Prof. Jan Mees, are opening the network day. After this, the participants receive an overview of the activities of Ghent University in Ostend.
  • 13:00-15:00 Lunch and Blue Exploration expo
Participants will have access to the research infrastructure of Ghent University in Ostend, which is available for multidisciplinary and cross-border collaboration.
  • 15:00-17:00 Blue Economy Walking Tour
During the Blue Walk we discover the 'Half Moon' site in Ostend: a valuable nature reserve with a lot of military heritage. But also a place with a lot of Blue Economy activity, both in the field of research and industry.

On the occasion of this event, a new collaboration agreement between Ghent University and VLIZ will be signed, and the new multidisciplinary research infrastructure of Ghent University at the Ostend Science Park will be presented.
