Abstract
The chapter discusses some of the history of tide gauges (sea-level recorders) and describes the different types of modern gauge now available, mentioning the increasing importance of radar gauges within the global network. Sea-level data streams and international data banks are described, together with methods for the quality control of the data. Characteristics of the sea-level variability to be observed in many mean sea-level records spanning decades or longer are described. The chapter also discusses particular types of temporary tide gauge, and the contexts in which they are used, including in geological fieldwork.
