| Abstract |
Terrestrial isopods (woodlice) can be extremely abundant in terrestrial ecosystems and are vital for ecosystem functioning. Being detritivores, they perform the first step in the breakdown of organic matter and are therefore crucial for nutrient cycling and carbon storage. Spinicornis, the terrestrial isopod group of Belgium, made intensive species inventories across the whole country gathering data from every 10 km x 10 km square in Belgium. The publication “De Landpissebedden van België” compiles old and new distribution data in to detailed species-specific distribution maps. The publication contains an identification key for all 36 Belgian species and some species that can be expected in the near future. Identification characteristics and habitat use of every species is discussed accompanied by beautiful pictures. This book is a valuable addition to the knowledge of terrestrial isopods in Western Europe. |
