Abstract
A general description is given of the microbial pollution of the coastal waters in Belgium. The different direct and indirect risks associated with the microorganisms causing this pollution are reviewed. Results are given more in particular on contamination by mesophile aerobic flora, coliforms, and fecal streptococs. The data for 20 sample campaings along the Belgian beaches are treated here and provided in two ways: tables of data from one site at different sample dates; graphs representing the evolution of contamination at the species level along the coast. The impact of the different sampling and calculation methods on the results are interpreted as well.
