Abstract
On January 20, 1999, the Belgian federal Parliament approved a law protecting the marine environment in areas under Belgian jurisdiction. The purpose of this law is to create a legal framework for nature conservation and to protect against marine pollution in the Belgian territorial sea and exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Th establishment of the EEZ is authorized by another new law, which has been submitted to Parliament for final approval. The need for law to protect the marine environment became clear after the Belgian state reform processes resulted in the federalisation of the Belgian state. The regions now have jurisdiction over matters such as nature conservation and environmental protection, however, the marine areas are not within the territory of any of the regions and they remain under federal competence.
