Abstract
    In our cultures of young turbots and young soles fed natural or artificial foods, growth was at least as good as in the natural environment. Hoping to improve our results, several series of experiments were carried out to determine the eventual role of the photoperiod in growth, and, to specify the most favorable illumination periods. During 3 months, we followed the growth in length and weight of several lots of young turbots of the 0 class, illuminated at the same intensity for 6 and 20 hr daily. The natural illumination of the control averaged 14 hr. We also followed the growth of young soles of approximately 1 year, subjected to photoperiods of 4, 12, and 20 hr. During the experiments the daily natural illumination of the controls averaged 9 hr . The most favorable photoperiod seems to be about 12 hr. At the beginning of the tests, however, longer illumination periods seem to stimulate growth. Some variations appear between the influence of the various photoperiods on the growth in length and the influence on weight.
