| Abstract |
Two points are selected on the species area curve, namely Molinier's points 20/2 and 20/1; in these points an increase of the area of 20% gives an increase of 2% (Molinier's point 20/2), or 1% (Molinier's point 20/1) in the species number. The location of these points does not depend on the ratio between the y and x axes which is used in plotting data and can be determined notwithstanding the total area sampled. The authors arbitrarily decide that these points are fiducial limits: minimal area lies between these two points. In Port-Vendres harbour, the minimal area lies between 64 and 140 cm-2. On this bases, the minimal areas of six other Mediterranean phytocoenoses were determined from previously published sources |
