| Abstract |
In this report the results of the shellfish supply recording are being represented, done by the RIVO-DLO in 1995 in the Fore Delta, in the frame of the project “ Effects of the shellfish fishery on the soil life in the Fore Delta” (VIEVO). As well as in 1994 the distribution and the biomass of all the shellfish species present in the Fore Delta, are being represented. Also attention is paid to the fishery on cockles, which took place the end of 1994 in the river mouth of Haringvliet. The fishers fished up most of the adult cockles in the mouth of Haringvliet, but in the fall of 1994 a great increase of young cockles took place. The great quantities of fresh water that left the Haringvliet locks, in the spring of 1995 in the Netherlands, had a disastrous effect on both young and still present adult cockles. Almost all cockles died. Also the other local shellfish suffered through it. In other places in the Fore Delta, however, an increase has been noted, in particular of razor-fish and half truncated sand shells (Spisula subtruncata). The total shellfish biomass in the Fore Delta has increased with factor six in one years time. Because there will be no cockle fishery in the Fore Delta in 1995 (and possibly also in 1996), hopes for the study on the direct, short-term effects of shellfishery are pinned on Spisula subtruncata. When the supply of this species develops well, new fishing may take place during the running time of VIEVO. In which case, new locations for effect research can possibly be chosen. |
