Abstract:
Het laboratorium voor Microbiologie (LM-UGent) werd opgericht in 1959. Het laboratorium richt zich op onderzoeksthema's als microbiële diversiteit, taxonomie, ecologie en diagnostiek in verschillende sectoren waaronder de medische, voedings- en omgevingsmicrobiologie, inclusief mariene microbiologie. Daarnaast huisvest deze groep de Belgian Coordinated Collections of Micro-organisms/Laboratorium voor Microbiologie, Universiteit Gent (BCCM/LMG) Bacteria Collectie die meer dan 27.000 stammen bevat, behorend tot meer dan 500 genera en 3.000 soorten. De BCCM/LMG Bacteria Collectie werd opgestart in 1982 als een door BELSPO gesteund project aan LM-UGent waarmee de toekomst van de bacteriënverzameling werd verzekerd die sinds de oprichting van het laboratorium was gegroeid.

Het marien onderzoek concentreert zich op de volgende onderwerpen:
  • onderzoek naar biodiversiteiteffecten op het functioneren van mariene benthische ecosystemen met een focus op de rol (en diversiteit) van bacteriën, vooral in de Paulinapolder in het Schelde-estuarium en het Belgische deel van de Noordzee. Bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de stikstof- en koolstofcyclus, intertidale benthische biofilms en interacties tussen diatomeeën, bacteriën en copepoden;
  • studie van de biodiversiteit, specificiteit en functie van endosymbiotische bacteriën in macroalgen;
  • identificatie en classificatie van nieuwe mariene bacteriën, met inbegrip van genoomanalyse;
  • karakterisering van enzymen van mariene bacteriën.


De groep is actief binnen diverse nationale en internationale projecten en werkt binnen de UGent intensief samen met de onderzoeksgroepen Mariene Biologie, Algologie, Protistologie en Aquatische Ecologie en het laboratorium voor Microbiële Ecologie en Technologie. Het laboratorium maakt deel uit van het Marine@UGent consortium en is partner binnen EMBRC.
