Abstract: |
De onderzoeksgroep Fycologie werd eind jaren 1990 opgericht onder de vroegere naam 'laboratorium voor Morfologie, Ecologie en Plantensystematiek'. Het onderzoek van het laboratorium is geleidelijk geëvolueerd van beschrijvende floristiek en taxonomische studies naar biogeografie, diversificatie, ontwikkelingsbiologie en genomica van mariene macroalgen (zeewieren). Meer specifiek worden de volgende thema's bestudeerd:
- ontwikkeling en controle van de levenscyclus van zeewieren: de mechanismen en genetica die de vruchtbaarheid en groei regelen worden bestudeerd in een aantal modelorganismen (bv. Ulva, Dictyota, Porphyra, Palmaria) waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van een combinatie van genetische en genomische technieken en kweekgebaseerde experimenten;
- evolutionaire dynamiek en biogeografie: de macro-evolutionaire studies beogen een antwoord te geven op de vraag naar de bloei of achteruitgang van algengroepen. Dit omvat het bestuderen van de relevante biologische, milieu- en geologische gegevens in een fylogenetische context;
- bacterie-algen interacties: de studie van de identiteit en de rol van prokaryote symbionten van sifonachtige groene algen, in samenwerking met het laboratorium Microbiologie (UGent);
- ruimtelijke en temporele analyse van gemeenschappen en de variatie van soorten: de verwerving en integratie van ruimtelijke gegevens met betrekking tot het mariene milieu en de toepassing op ecologische, biogeografische en evolutionaire vraagstukken (ecologische nichemodellering, teledetectie van ruimtelijke en temporele veranderingen in zeewiergemeenschappen);
- taxonomie en diversiteit: de groep heeft uitgebreide ervaring in dit onderzoeksdomein en blijft zich inzetten voor deze discipline, waarbij de nadruk ligt op DNA-onderzoek en statistische morfometrie;
- invasieve biologie: de groep gebruikt correlatieve en mechanistische modelleringstechnieken om de verspreiding en het uiteindelijke bereik van invasieve mariene macroalgen te voorspellen. Deze laatste techniek maakt gebruik van fysiologische gegevens betreffende de groei onder verschillende milieuomstandigheden.
Wat hun toekomstige diensten betreft, wil de groep een leidende rol spelen bij de ontwikkeling van een aquacultuursector voor zeewier in Europa. Verder neemt de onderzoeksgroep Fycologie deel aan zowel Belgische als internationale onderzoeksprojecten en werkt ze samen met verschillende onderzoeksgroepen wereldwijd. |
