Abstract
In 1999 The Panama Canal Commission (PCC) widened two reaches of the Gaillard Cut from 152.4m to 192.0m in straight reaches and 222.5m in bends to meet growing demands for service by increasing the capacity of the Panama Canal. This widening was to allow two-way traffic for Panamax and Supers in the Gaillard Cut and thus eliminate convoying operations of a rapidly increasing percentage of the canal traffic. To test the plan and develop operating guidelines, the PCC conducted a set of meetings of these ships for the newly widened canal sections of Bas Obispo and Las Cascadas with a select set of pilots. Some of the ship meeting tests were measured using Dual-frequency Differential Global Positioning System (DDGPS) gages mounted on the ship’s bow and both bridge wings. The meetings test program focused on ships with combined beams greater than operationally allowed in the canal at that time. Measurements and operational guidelines are presented in this report.
