The AWI`s Wadden Sea Station in List on the island of Sylt is the northernmost research centre in Germany. Located within walking distance of the Wadden Sea, it offers the ideal point of departure for research at sea, in the intertidal zone, or in the station`s own laboratories. Originally a small field station for oyster research founded in 1924, the Wadden Sea Station Sylt can look back on a long history and proud research tradition as part of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland. The station is also home to the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence.

Research carried out at Sylt includes: coastal ecology, ecosystems anaylses, long-term ecology, community and evolutional ecology.
Sylt's mission is to:

  1. Promote research and training on the biology of marine organisms and ecosystems
  2. Provide access for staff and non-resident researchers to the ecological and biological resources of the site
  3. Carry out long-term observations of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the coastal environment
  4. Carry out research ranging from genes to the marine environment.

This includes the study of biological processes in marine organisms, the study of the marine environment and the way it shapes ecosystems, populations and organisms, and the functional and evolutionary processes that structure marine biodiversity. The research places the responses of individual organisms and species to these stressors in terms of physiology, ecology and evolution, into a population and community context.

The station maintains a close collaboration with the Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten Sylt, which presents the results of AWI research efforts in its permanent exhibit and offers tours of the Wadden Sea Station.
