Pollution by hazardous substances

Definition : Concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) in biota and sediments and concentrations of Tributyltin (TBT) in sediments and the water column of coasts and harbours.
Description : The concentration of the hazardous substances PAH and TBT in the water column, sediments and biota indicate the extent of the input and release of toxic and cancerigenous substances in the environment and the impact on habitat and species, including humans. The trends observed in the concentration of these substances allow to evaluate the effect of specific environmental policy and legislation, such as the phase-out of the application of TBT paints in 2003 and complete removal from ships' hulls by 2008.
