Sea level rise

Definition : Sea level relative to land (in mm). Revised Local reference datasets from the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) are reduced to a common datum approximately 7,000mm below mean sea level in order to enhance global comparability. In the Netherlands, sea level is compared to Normaal Amsterdamsch Peil.
Description : The IPCC Fourth Assessment report (2007) on climate change predicts a rise of 14-59 cm in global (mean) sea level by 2100, as a result of the thermal expansion of ocean water and melting of the ice sheets. Coastal areas, and in particular low-lying areas and regions where a negative or downward vertical land movement is taking place, are facing greater threats.
