Percentage of the population at risk from tidal flooding

  • Definition : The percentage of the total population in the coastal sub-region, that is actually living within the zone at risk from tidal flooding, in any given year.
  • Calculation : Overlay of data layers: 1) GIS layer or shapes of the coastal flood zone, or the area prone to tidal flooding. If no flood zones have been demarcated officially, then the 5m contours are used to delineate as flood zone 2) GIS layer of 'settlements' or major urban concentrations of the population in the SAIL region. From overlay of both, population living within flood zone boundary is estimated/calculated, divided by the total population of the reference coastal sub-region, multiplied by 100.
  • Unit : Percentage
