Syllides eburneus new species, is described from the subtidal zone of the southern Gulf of Maine and the intertidal zone of the northern part. Morphological data obtained from living individuals of Syllides convoluta Webster & Benedict, 1884, S. benedicti Banse, 1971, S. longocirrata (Örsted, 1845), and S. setosa Verrill, 1882 occuring in the region are presented to clarify discrepancies which have arisen from the use of fixation artifacts encountered in preserved specimens. The role of protraction and retraction in the location of the foregut in specific setigers is discussed. Syllides setosa Verrill, 1882 is accepted as a valid species, whose morphology has been misinterpreted.
