This study examines the drastic crew labor shortage in Taiwan.Unlike previous jobsearching studies,we develop a theoretical framework to incorporate work characteristicsand consumption technology as suggested by Lancaster(1966,1971).A survey of twohundred maritime institute students demonstrate that work characteristics, time allocationand consumption technology factors play important roles in job searching decisions.Thestudents' reserve wage and working hours differ significantly from the current wage structure and working environment of the fishery and shipping sectors. The implications forcrew supply and incentive programs are also discussed.
