Biology Type of larval development: short planktonic, non-planktotrophic as usual in Vetigastropoda and Patellogastropoda [details]
Diagnosis Shell conical with flat base, up to 8-10 mm high. Whorls flat, sometimes the last ones slightly concave. Sculpture formed by beaded cords, narrower than the interspaces in which there are very fine, prosocline lamellae; a considerably thicker compound cord is seen above the suture on the spire and at the periphery of body whorl; base imperforate, with ca. 6 spiral cords which are smoother than on the whorls. Aperture subquadrangular, with a moderate denticle at the base of the columella; outer lip with a cutting edge.
Colour of the first whorls typically reddish, the later whorls usualy whitish with red, brown or (more rarely) black flames, the peripheral cord usually articulated with red and white. Interior of aperture nacreous.
This species is distinguished from most European species of Jujubinus by the strong granulations on the cords, from Clelandella miliaris (Brocchi, 1814) by the narrower profile with sometimes concave whorls, thicker peripheral cord and reddish tones. [details]
Distribution Eaastern Atlantic, from the British islands to Morocco; Mediterranean, usually in 0-30 m. Gorringe, Seine and Ampère seamounts (common in 82-325 m, the deeper occurrences probably resulting of downslope transport)
