Natural, human and economic assets at risk

Definition : Number of people living in the area at risk from coastal flooding, area of protected sites and value of economic assets within the zone at risk from coastal flooding.
Description : Flood zones are defined by the 5m height contours. In the UK, the flood zone is further defined by a risk assessment delineating the area that is likely to be flooded in the event of a storm ocurring with 1 in a 1000 chance of flooding from the sea in any given year. In The Netherlands the safety levels are statutory and laid down in the Act on Water Defences. In Zeeland, the highest safety levels for flood protection structures in Europe apply (a 1 in 4,000 chance of flooding).
