Special lecture - History of Marine Science in Belgium

Ruth Pirlet (°1988) obtained her master’s degree in History (major in cultural history) at the Catholic University of Leuven. She started her career in 2012 as a scientific assistant at the Flanders Marine Institute, initially working on a project concerning the history of oyster farming at the Belgian coast. During the following 5 years, she further focused on different sea related historical topics, with an emphasis on research on the history of Flemish sea fisheries (especially during the time period 1792-1830) and the history of the development of the marine sciences in Belgium (19th-20th century). Since September 2017, she is working as a scientific assistant at the NAVIGO National Fisheries Museum (Oostduinkerke, Belgium).
